In its ongoing battle against Samsung, Apple may be forced to unveil a smaller, cheaper version of its flagship phone, says Strategy Analytic.

Will the iPhone get a baby brother?

Is an "iPhone Mini" on the horizon? Strategy Analytic analyst Neil Maws ton thinks so. But why?
Will the iPhone get a baby brother?
Samsung has been the clear winner in the smartphone wars, with Apple playing second fiddle. And that lead may wider further in 2013.
Maws ton expects Samsung to carve out a 33 percent chunk of the smartphone market this year, up from a projected 31 percent in 2012. At the same time, Apple's share will inch up to 21 percent from 20 percent last year. Samsung could sell as many as 290 million smartphones this year, while Apple is likely to sell 180 million i Phones.
The Korean handset maker has the edge over Apple in large part because it "plays in more segments," Maws ton told Reuters, allowing it to "capture more volume than Apple."
To fight back, Apple may try to win over a larger base of consumers by launching a smaller, cheaper variant of the iPhone, dubbed the "iPhone Mini" by the analyst.
With the iPhone 5 grabbing huge demand and sales, a low-end model may not be on Apple's agenda this year.

Apple's Podcasts app get another fix

Apple has issued a second update for its standalone Podcasts app for iOS, which launched in June.
The app, which freed video and audio shows from the iTunes app where they had become somewhat lost in the shuffle, arrived to a luke-warm reception a few weeks back.
The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch app had been quitting on users regularly, and a first stability update didn't seem to cure the issue back in late June.

More performance enhancements

Now, reports 9to5Mac, update 1.0.2 is available for download, which brings more performance enhancements but no new features.
Apple's release notes say: "Podcasts 1.0.2 provides performance and stability improvements, including addressing an issue that may cause Podcasts to quit unexpectedly on launch."
You can update your app by accessing the Updates section of the App Store.

Google targets spam apps, malware and clones in Play Store

Google plans to rid its Android app store of malicious apps, obvious copycats and spam. Big changes to the Google Playdeveloper policies mean that rogue apps will be booted from the shop in September.
In an email to Android developers -- picked up by Android Central -- Google says that its updated policy provides "more detail on the kinds of dangerous products that are not allowed on Google Play."
That includes apps that collect information (such as location or behavior) without the user's knowledge, and apps that cause users to unknowingly download or install stuff from outside of Google Play.
Apps that send text messages or emails without some kind of notification will be against the rules, as they are considered spam apps. Same goes for apps that are primarily designed to drive affiliate traffic to a website.
Google is also restricting the use of names or icons that are confusingly similar to existing system apps -- "to reduce user confusion" -- and restricting in-app purchases to Google Play's proprietary payment system.
Also, developers shouldn't "pretend to be someone else" and must not say that an app is "authorised by or produced by another company or organization if that is not the case".
"We are constantly striving to make Google Play a great community for developers and consumers," Google said in the email. "This requires us to update our policies when we launch new features, like subscription billing, and also when we see unhealthy behaviour, like deceptive app names and spammy notifications."
New apps will be "immediately subject to the latest version of the Program Policy", while current developers will have 30 days to make the necessary changes. After that, any apps that are in violation of the rules will be booted from Google Play.

Windows 8 app developers can offer 7 day trials, but can't sell below 99p

Microsoft has revealed its pricing plans for Windows 8 apps, in ablog post for developers. It has detailed price tiers, free trials, and just how much cash it will take from each sale.
Paid apps can be priced at a number of tiers, ranging from $1.49 (99p) to $999.99 (£640). That's in contrast to the Mac App Store, where Apple lets developers price their wares as low as 99c (69p).
App makers can put their software out for free, and then make revenue through Microsoft's own in-app purchasing, a third party billing mechanism (like PayPal or similar) or advertising.
Developers can also offer seven-day trials for paid apps. "On the Windows Phone, we have seen apps with trials bring up to five times the revenue of apps without trials," writes Arik Cohen, lead program manager for commerce and licensing.
Much like the iTunes App Store and Android's Google Play, Microsoft will take a 30 percent cut of your app's price. However, if a download reaches $25,000 (£16,000) in revenue -- through app sales and in-app purchases -- Microsoft will only take 20 percent.
When Windows 8 launches on 26 October, developers can still offer their desktop software on the web or on a DVD, as usual. However, Metro apps and apps for RT tablets must be sold through the Windows Store.

Jelly Bean the latest Android 4.1

Jelly Bean, the latest iteration of Google’s incredibly popular mobile operating system. As always, Google have continued with their traditional confectionery-based naming convention, and Jelly Bean will replace the current ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ 4.0 build of Android as the new top dog.

Despite the small step from version 4.0 to version 4.1, Jelly Bean is still quite a major upgrade to Android, providing a host of new features, performance improvements and design polish.
First Impressions
At first glance Jelly Bean looks remarkably similar to the previous version of Android. The home screen is almost exactly the same as before, apart from a different default wallpaper and some minor cosmetic changes to the ever-present ‘Google Search’ bar. These similarities quickly disappear once you begin using the OS.
Performance

As soon as you begin navigating your way around the system you can immediately feel a marked improvement in the overall performance of Android. The animations, menu interactions, improved touch response and overall ’snappiness’ of the OS have been dramatically improved. This is all thanks to a new initiative by Google called ‘Project Butter’, which aims to optimise performance of the Android user interface, making it leaner, faster and more responsive in every way. All that hard work has definitely paid off, Jelly Bean is buttery smooth.

Facebook App center now available in English speaking countries.

It's been nearly a month since we saw Facebook officially introduce us to its newly minted App Center, and now Zuck & Co. are taking the application-loaded service to internet grounds over in the UK.    Facebook's App Center in the Kingdom (or, as UKers call it, App Centre)     won't be much different in comparison to its American counterpart, thus you'll still be able to grab all those big-name apps like the network's own Instagram, Draw Something, Spotify and Pinterest -- of course, there's over 600 others to choose from. In addition to these, though, there are some Euro-specific additions to the application mix, including Deezer's music streaming goods. Eager to find out what all the App Centre fuss is about? Then head over to the source below, where you'll be able to poke around it yourself.

it’s official: Facebook has now extended the App Center to Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, with Brazil, France, Germany, Russia, Spain, Taiwan, and Turkey coming in following weeks. And in a nod to making the platform more accessible to developers from around the world, it’s also introducing a translation tool.
